Blooming Bulbs…NOW!

I don’t know where you are, but here in NC it’s a rainy, dreary day!  One of those days where you could stay in bed all day or curl up on the couch and watch a movie (or a book I suppose but I’m not much of a reader).  This morning I decided I needed to add some spring to the house so I planted the hyacinth bulbs I picked up the other day at a local nursery.  Why wait until Spring for them to bloom?!?

I set the bulbs in a little bit of water so the roots could start to grow (they already had a few leaves sprouting up when I bought them).  Then I filled a vase with stones (you could use marbles or rocks as well) and nestled the bulbs in place so they wouldn’t tip over.  Next I filled the container with water, just enough so that the bottom of the bulbs were touching the water.

I wish I had gotten 4 of them…in this case an odd number didn’t work out so well for me! Oh well!

And that’s it!  Now I’ll watch them grow for about 4-6 weeks, until I can smell their yummy scent!  You can do this with just about any spring bulb: tulips, paper whites, daffodils, crocus.  If you don’t want to grow them in water you an always plant them in soil.  Make sure you put them in water a few days before planting so their roots can grow.

Here are tulips grown in a cylinder vase of water…love it!

I will post pictures once they bloom!  Happy planting…indoors!
